IMPORTANT: The windsurfing & Surfing outlines below are aimed at beginners at both sports. However, we also offer windsurfing & Surfing combo packages for intermediate & advanced boardriders including combo equipment rental packages that can be designed around your ability. These can including mixed ability packages e.g.:

Beginner/Intermediate boardriders
• 3hr beginner surfing course
• 3hr intermediate windsurfing course
• 1 week windsurfing equipment rental + 10 hours surfing equipment rental

Advanced and Experienced boardriders
• 4hr advanced windsurfing clinic
• 1 week surfing equipment rental

WINDSURFING & SURFING TUITION

The beginners teaching programmes have been developed according to the VDWS (International School Association for Watersports) standards and guidelines. The lessons provide a proven step-by-step approach to learn windsurfing and surfing safely and quickly. The instructors are all VDWS (Internationaler Schulverband für Wassersport) qualified.

WINDSURFING FULL BEGINNER COURSE

NEWBIES & BEGINNERS WINDSURFING COURSE

The course is designed to help you take your first steps into a new sport and hopefully fuel an addiction of a lifetime. You will receive all the theory and practice necessary to get you up and sailing on your own. You will go from being a beginner to an intermedaite windsurfer during this course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

This course is aimed at those who want an introduction to windsurfing and who have never tried it before. No Experience is required but you need to be able to swim 50 meters in open water.

DURATION

10 Hours (split over 3 or 4 days)

GOAL

In no time at all you will be on the water sailing alongside your instructor in the safety of the bay. You will quickly learn correct sailing stance, grip, board control and basic steering. You will learn how to tack and how to stay upwind.

SURFING FULL BEGINNER COURSE

NEWBIES & BEGINNERS SURFING COURSE

This course is designed to help you take your first steps into the 'sport of kings' and you will receive all the theory and practice necessary to get you up and riding your first wave to the shore. You will cover all the theory and practise

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

This course is aimed at those who want an introduction to surfing and who have never tried it before. No Experience is required but you need to be able to swim 50 meters in open water.

DURATION

6 Hours (split over 2 or 3 days)

GOAL

The main aim of the Beginners Surf Course is get you up and riding waves in a safe and fun environment. The surf course at this level covers the following Surfing Essentials:
• Beach safety, currents/rip tides, Weather and Wave formation
• Equipment - How to handle it in the water
• Proning, stalling and accelerating board
• Paddling techniques
• Popup/stance refinement
• Catching broken waves
• Take-off (straight)
• Safe Wipe-out technique
• Turning right or left
• Paddling “outside”
• Position in line-up, wave selection, and timing
• Catching green waves and angled take-offs.
• Surfing etiquete
By the end of the course you should have experienced the rush of riding a green/broken wave safely to the shore.

THE WATERSPORTS ACADEMY - SANTA MARIA, SAL

The Cape Verde Windsurfing & Surfing Academy is a recognized VDWS (Internationaler Schulverband für Wassersport) center. This German watersports accreditation ensures that you are taught by qualified instructors using proven teaching techniques & that all the courses follow the latest safety guidelines for accredited schools.

WINDSURFING & SURFING INSTRUCTORS

The academy instructors are also all VDWS trained and members of the VDWS which is an international governing body for watersports.

The instructors have years of experience as windsurfers & instructors and are accustomed to coaching at different levels. They have all the necessary skills & experience to help newbies & beginners to progress to a level where they can become independant windsurfers and surfers. The instructors are multi-lingual & speak English, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.

WATERSPORTS SAFETY

Your safety is our prime concern, the Cape Verde Watersports Center offer a low student-to-teacher ratio and the have a rescue vehicle (Zodiac) at their disposal at all times. The center has the latest safety systems as well as helmets and life vests.
