Our base is the picturesque coastal village of Loredo in the Ribamontan al Mar area of Cantabria. The village lies across the bay from the historic and capital city of the region Santander. This area is blessed with miles of golden sandy beaches/coves and lies in the green foothills of the ‘Picos de Europa’ a towering mountain range that seems to sweep western Cantabria towards the sea. The water is clean and the atmosphere is great. This is the birthplace of Spanish Surfing and our established school is run by local surfer Mario and his father «Meco» a pioneer of surfing in Spain and a local legend.

Late spring, summer and autumn are ideal times to visit as the surf is consistent and the climate is pleasent, becoming warmer during the summer months. There’s plenty of breaks to suit all levels, the beaches tend to offer a good range of facilities for locals and tourists and the more you explore the thinner the crowds become! These factors combine to make Cantabria a perfect surf destination for all levels of surfers.

THE SURF

Cantabria has incredible surf. Spots start working in 1ft swells and some spots can hold 20ft swells! There is always a ridable wave somewhere and because the coast is so jagged the breaks work in different swell and wind directions. Cantabria has it all from gentle beach breaks with sandy bottom to spitting, gnarly reefs, some short, hoolow and powerful and others, like the wave at Fortaleza, have walls that seem to peel forever.

WHAT’S ON OFFER?

The ‘Northern Spain Surf Experience’ is located in the lively coastal town of Loredo. It’s never been easier for visitors to learn to surf here, with a reputable surf school running lessons on the beach at Loredo. This beach has perfect waves for beginners to learn on. There are vey few rocks and there are always decent sandbanks close to the shore, which means that beginners never have to venture deep out into the ocean to catch waves.

Learn-2-surf is a great way for people to immerse themselves in the surf travel lifestyle and learn how to surf or perfect their surfing techniques with like-minded people. The Surf courses are run with a friendly chilled vibe and are ideal for single travellers. The long established Loredo Surf School has perfected it’s Surf Tuition programme over the years, it employs experienced Surf Instrcutors who have plenty of experience in surfing and have teaching qualifications recognized by the FES (Spanish Surfing Federation) and the Lifeguard Association. The surf school has a wide range of surf equipment all from leading surf brands.

WHO WILL IT APPEAL TO?

Cantabria is a surfing destination like no other and with a direct ferry link from the UK and loads of cheap flights into Santander and Bilbao it’s an excellent destination for Europeans wanting to escape the winter chill.

Experienced surfers will find a wide range of challenging waves from October to April. However this coast is a swell magnet and picks up regular swells from September each year and many times the season will run until the end of June.

During the ‘wave season’ ond over weekends things get fairly crowded at the ‘hot spots’ but mid week and at the lesser surfed breaks crowds are thin and the vibe is friendly.

People new to surfing and beginners are not restricted to the wave season and Cantabria will deliver suitable surf for newbies and beginnersis all year round.
