SURFING HOLIDAYS IN KWAZULU-NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA

THE KINGDOM OF THE ZULU

Known as the Kingdom of the Zulu, the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is a melting pot of African, European and Indian cultures and is a surfer's paradise. There are ridable waves everywhere, including hollow beach breaks, point breaks and a few classic reef breaks.

Durban

Alternative Names: Durbanas, IThekwini, Port Natal, Дурбан, ڈربن, ダーバン, 德班Surf, sun and sand – that is Durban. The city beaches are insanely crowded but with more than 100 km of coastline to explore you are almost guaranteed to find an uncrowded wave. 320 days of sunshine a year, sea temperatures along the coast compare with those of the Mediterranean in summer (24°C) and in winter they seldom fall below 19°C (10° warmer than the Mediterranean in the same season).

THE SURF

The coast of the KwaZulu-Natal is a surfer's paradise. There are surfable waves everywhere, including hollow beach breaks, point breaks and a few classic reef breaks. Durban beachfront is a perfect place to learn to surf with waves ranging from 0-2 ft but also great for experienced surfers when the big 10-12 ft waves driven by a cold front hit the piers.

The water temperature is warm all year round, so the most you are going to need is a spring suit. On hot days in summer and winter you will be quite comfortable surfing in boardshorts.

WINTER

The most consistent surf is to be found in the winter months, from May through to August, mainly due to the cold fronts that sweep up the coast from the Cape, bringing solid six to eight-foot swells. In these conditions all the point breaks along the coast will be firing. You will find good clean surf most mornings during winter as a gentle land breeze blows straight off-shore.

SUMMER

In summer the swell tends to be a bit smaller with fun surf available at the many beach breaks. The best surf at this time of the year is during light south-westerlies or early in the morning before the north-easterly starts to blow.

WHY KWAZULU-NATAL?

One of the big attractions of surfing in the Kingdom of the Zulu is uncrowded waves. A handful of popular breaks get crowded when the surf is good, but there is a long coastline to explore with dozens of uncrowded quality waves to be found.

The roads are excellent along most of the coast, so access to the surf is easy. However the coast from northern Zululand right up to the Mozambique border is wild with few access points. Large sections of the Zululand coast are protected marine reserves. There are ridable waves everywhere, most of which have never been surfed – an ideal place for a surf adventure.

Experienced surfers will find a wide range of challenging waves from May through to August when cold fronts off the Cape produce big 6 - 8ft swells that light up the reefs and point breaks dotted along the sprawling coastline.

People new to surfing and beginners will prefer the waves in In summer the swell tends to be a bit smaller with fun surf available at the many beach breaks.
