SURF COURSES & SURFING LESSONS/TUITION
A week or two at the Sagres Surf Camp is the easiest and faster way to learn and/or improve your surfing. The surf school will be able to offer sound advice on what surfboard you should be riding, taking into account your level of ability, physical make up and general fitness. You'll surf the best spots and learn the fundamentals of surfing while your at it.
The Surf Crew include professional surfers, surf monitors, surf guides and qualified instructors with years of experience teaching at different levels. The surf guides are locals with an intimate knowledge of this coast.
All lessons are taught using the latest, high quality surf gear and follow the FPS teaching method and course outline for effective and safe learning. The surf classes take place at the best surf spot on any given day depending on the wind and swell direction.
The Sagres Surf Camp & School offer courses and lessons aimed at all levels of surfers including:
Newbies & beginners: learn to surf in a fun and safe environment
Intermediates: improve an aspect of your surfing or style with a surf clinic
Experienced surfers: base yourselves at the surf house and go explore!
NEWBIES & BEGINNERS
For beginners or people who have never surfed before this is the ideal way to start. Whatever people may tell you, surfing is not easy to learn. You can either persevere long enough and you'll eventually get the hang of it or you can save hours of frustration and shorten your learning curve by following a professional surf course. The advantages of the surf classes are obvious: a faster and safer progression, timely error correction and a good understanding of the fundamentals like currents, rips, swells, wind directions, types of waves and breaks etc. A solid base is elemental for a good performance in any sport.
On the beach, youll learn basic theory including water safety and be shown the fundamentals of surfing including paddling technique and the 'pop up'. You'll then hit the water to practice what you've learnt and to gain confidence with the equipment and the ocean. The first lessons take place in shallow water catching 'broken' waves. Each day you go a little deeper into the ocean, closer to the unbroken or 'green' waves and by the end of the course you should be catching and riding green waves to the shore.
The crew always have a watchful eye on the newbies and beginners and your instructor will keep checking with you to make sure youre ok, not too exhausted and give you encouragement and tips on improving your surfing.
INTERMEDIATE & EXPERIENCED SURFERS
The Surf Clinics are aimed at intermediate surfers and here your surfing will be analysed by a professional and gradually you will learn to substitute the wrong techniques for the correct ones, as well introduce new advanced surfing techniques. Your surf clinic coaches have experience teaching at intermediate level and this knowledge enables them to offer you professional tips and advice.
The surf camp is also a perfect base for experienced surfers who'll find that the western Algarve offers a huge variety of waves and surf conditions from small, glassy beach breaks to epic peeling point breaks and sucky, hollow reefs. Stay at the surf house and surf the best breaks of the region, spots where you can enjoy perfect waves surrounded by untouched nature.
Winter usually produces bigger swells and more powerful surf but summer has its classic periods. You can use the boards and suits provided by the school or feel free to bring your own quiver See our 'What to bring' page for board and wetsuit recommendations.
EQUIPMENT & SAFETY
All the equipment used is specifically designed for beginners and intermediates with safety being the key factor. Beginners use boards specifically designed for both stability and safety. Intermediates will use boards which provide a good blend of stability, manouverability and performance. The instructors will select a board suitable for your size, weight and ability.
All the equipment is checked and maintained on a regular basis to ensure you have the best material at your disposal. The surf school also provide a wide range of good quality wetsuits and rash vests.
