SURFING HOLIDAYS IN PORTUGAL'S PORTO & ALGARVE REGIONS

PORTUGAL SURFARI - SOME OF THE SURF SPOTS YOU'LL VISIT

This is rough guide to some of the surf spots and beaches you'll see while you're travelling down the Portuguese coast. Obviously this is subject to change with regards to wind speed and direction, swell direction and size, weather the ability of the group etc.

Portuguese surfers are generally friendly in the water and we have never had any problems. Please remember to treat locals with respect and to have a good, friendly attitude in the water. No matter how good a surfer you think you are, and no matter how crap you think the local surfers are, they are the locals. Imagine scores of surfers arriving at your home break and giving everyone in the water attitude, I'm sure you'd be just as protective of your spot.

PORTO E NORTE & BEIRAS REGIONS

FIGUEIRA DA FOZ

Former WCT-venue, this beach break is suitable for beginner to experienced surfers. Handles big swell. On bigger days the beginners and intermediate surfers head to the other side between the harbour heads for more protection. Great even in windy conditions because harbour heads offer shelter from the wind. Offshore in easterly or southeasterlies.

The city also has a reef break, however this spot usually does not work in summer. The locals here are super friendly and two or three times during the season you'll join them for an impromptu sardine bbq.

MURTIHEIRA

This is a Beach break just north of Figueira da Foz

'SECRET SPOT' IN THE FIGUEIRA DA FOZ AREA

This is a Beach break with rocky outcrops that help hold the sandbars in place. A great spot on small to medium swells, it works through all the tides and is offshore with easterly winds.

PEDROGÃO TO PRAIA VELHA

A beach break out 30 km from Figueira da Foz. Only really works in small swells as its a long and exposed beach it quickly picks up too much swell and starts closing out. Some great sand banks here and spots to surf off the jetties. Surf at high tide in easterly or wind still conditions.

‘SECRET SPOT’ NO CLUES!

We'd love to tell your more but then we'd have to kill ya ;-). All we can tell you is that it's on a wide open beach break in a pine forest. Dolphins can sometimes join you in the water. lots of peaks.

Lisboa region - Peniche peninsula

The Peniche peninsula is surrounded by cracking waves. Both the north and south coasts boast a host of excellent surf spots. As this is a peninsula ther is always a spot that is offshore, clean and glassy.

LAGIDE / LAGIDO

This is a famous reef break. It is a good quality left hander reef breaking over a coral reef. It's great wave to surf in that it has several fast and slow sections. Works best in Northerly swells with offshore winds coming from the S, SW and SE. It is ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers.

MOLHO L'ESTE

Tucked away in a mini rivermouth near the harbour, this is a fast, hollow and wedgy right hander breaking next to a pier on a sandy bottom. Molhe L' Este is an excellent quality wave it can get as good as Supertubos. It needs a big swell to work but when it's on it's considered one of the best waves around. Works best with N or NW winds and SW swells.

Surfing at Molhe Leste, Portugal.

SUPERTUBOS (AKA SUPERTUBES & SUPERS)

Supertubos is one of the best beachbreaks in the world. It's fast with long and heavy barrels breaking over a hollow sand bank. It works best with SW swells and N, NE or NW winds. If you are an expert surfer and getting tubed is what you live for, this is your spot.

CANTINHO DA BAÍA

This is an outstanding wave for beginners and intermediate surfers. It's a very consistent wave during the summer. It's a left and right peak, starting slow but with a quicker inside section. Works best on North westerly swells.

Algarve west coast

ODECEIXE

Rivermouth reef and beach break that works on small to medium swells. Offshore in easterly winds and sheltered from the wind by cliffs at the northern end peaks work best at low to mid tide. Uncrowded surf spot in great natural surroundings.

AMOREIRA

A left hand sandbar at the river mouth which works on a big swell and can deliver some good long walling waves and there is a reef break in the middle of the bay. This spot works on small to medium swells, and on a small swell there are peaks everywhere. A good beach for beginners when the swell is small. Offshore in easterly wind.

ARRIFANA

A right hand point break and beach break that work on Medium to big swells. Offshore wind from the east. This is a one of the most consistent waves in the area, works through all the tides is protected from Northerly winds and because it's sheltered in big swells it works when eveywhere else is maxed out. The point is a big right hander breaking over a rocky and boulder strewn bottom. The point is for experienced surfers only.

VALE DE FIGUEIRAS

Works on small to meduim swells and is offshore in easterly winds. The access to this spot is difficult and it's kinda hard to find even once you get down the track. The up side of this is that it doesn't get crowded and often you'll have it to yourself. The beach is huge and the waves break over a sand covered reef. At low tide there are peaks all along the beach with excellent lefts and rights.

CARRAPATEIRA / BORDEIRA

One of this regions top spots: Wide open beach break plus left hand point break. Works in small to meduim northwesterly swells and offshore in easterly winds. The wave near the rivermouth is best surfed on the rising tide from low to mid. Great long rides here, the long sandy beach has waves and peaks along its entire length and the sandbanks here create excellent tubey waves.

PUNTA RUEVA

A right hand point break that works in small, medium or large swells. this point breaks picks up any swell and is offshore in southerly winds. Again access is down a rough track and the spot can be difficult to find.
