CORTEGAÇA SURF CLINICS & SURF GUIDING -SURF SPOTS & BREAKS
Northern Portugal is the ideal place for uncrowded, classic surf. Its blessed with some seriously sweet swells throughout most of the year and has to be the most uncrowded spot in Europe. As yet this area is relatively undiscovered by mass tourism and has largely escaped the focus of the surfing world. While the majority of travelling surfers have their attention centered on the waves of the south, local surfers have enjoyed the consistent swells and high quality waves of this region. In the summer there are fun waves everywhere and in spring and autumn the waves pick up in size and power and offer and offer the intermedaite or experienced surfer the chance to explore some of the epic spots. On the right days, and with a little local guidance you'll find perfect waves all over this beautiful coastline. Just get out there
The whole coast is littered with unknown spots just begging to be surfed. You don't even have to wander very far from well known breaks to find yourself surfing alone and possibly on an even beter peak.
VILA DO CONDE & AZURARA
The beach at Vila do Conde (Praia Azul) produces excellent lefts and rights and works through all tides. The beach is west-facing and is best in meduim swells with easterly winds.
Azurara lies just south of Vila do Conde and produces some nice right handers when the banks are good. Best with a northerly wind.
MATOSINHOS
The bay at Matosinhos can hold swells of 6ft + and has point breaks at both ends of the bay with beach breaks in the middle. The point at the northern end produces nice right-handers while the center of the bay delivers a left and right beach break. The southern end of the bay gets the brunt of the swell and has the biggest waves including a left hand point break and a righthand beach break.
LUZ
This right hand point break in downtown Porto can handle big swells and produces a quality wave. Offshore in easterly winds.
CABELDO DO DOURO
The river mouth of the Douro River in Oporto, is a very long and powerful 'A-frame' wave, that offers great right hand tube rides with shorter lefts available on the other side of the peak. It doesn't get classic too often but when it does, it's a serious contender for the 'best right-hander in Europe' award! Works best in Meduim to big swells, offshore in easterly winds.
ESPINHO
Known for its powerful rights, this point break is one of the most consistent surf spots in Portugal. This wave works through all the tides but is best on mid to low tide and easterly winds.
MORE
The whole area around Porto, especially to the south, has numerous surf spots, empty line ups and waves suitable for surfers of all abilities.
