Portugals Central Coast is a surfing nirvana, world class waves to be had at both ends of this coast from Ericeira to Peniche. For surfers with a sense of adventure, there are plenty of uncrowded, high quality waves to be had along the coast between these two surfing hot spots. Both areas have been at the center of Portuguese surfing since surfing started here. Today these spots are home to world class local surfers and scores of travelling surfers. Both Peniche and Ericeira host legs of the world surfing tour each year.
SURFING IN ERICEIRA
In terms of wave quality Ericeira has the advantage over Peniche, but lacks the flexibility and variety offered by the Peniche and Baleal peninsulas. Ericeira's coastline faces due west and is made up of a series of high quality reef breaks and occasional sandy beachbreaks.
SURFING IN PENICHE
Because it is a peninsula Peniche breaks in a huge variety of conditions. On days when Ericeira is maxed out, Peniche will still be delivering epic tubes at Supertubos, one of the best beachbreaks in the world. At the eastern end of the bay lies Baleal also on a peninsula. This setup means that there are beaches facing almost every direction imaginable. The result is is super consistant area of high quality waves.

WHY SURF IN THE LISBOA VALE DO TEJO REGION?
One of the big attractions of surfing in this region is the incredible diversity of the waves and surfing locations. The beautiful beaches, steep cliffs, pleasant water temperature and waves that work under various conditions all make this area a great surf destination. The popular breaks at Coxos and Supertubos get crowded when the surf is good, but there are literally dozens of uncrowded quality waves to be found with a little exploration. For more information on the Lisboa region please see our 'Destination Guide'.

WHO WILL IT APPEAL TO?
Peniche and Ericeira may be in the same region but these two places are worlds apart. Ericeira is a small fishing village with typical blue and white azulejos (Portuguese decorative tiles) still adorn the house fronts. The tourism here is mostly national which also gives Ericeira a special flair. Ericeira is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon and the tourist resorts, yet has a suprisingly lively nightlife.
The quaint fishing port of Peniche lies in the shelter of a great headland on Portugal's rugged Atlantic coast. Peniche is a paradox, it is both ugly and extremely beautiful. The old walled town with its formidable walls and stunning harbour is picturesque and steeped in history. In stark contrast to the sardine processing factory and industrial area just outside the old town. The stunningly beautiful beaches and epic surf more than make up for this gross oversight in city planning.
