Brief orientation and introduction, load gear on rack, and drive south into Mexico, stopping at the busiest border crossing in the world to acquire tourist permits for all guests. The contrast between affluent San Diego and the city of Tijuana is drastic and eye opening. After about 2 hours of driving we leave civilization behind and continue through a variety of breathtaking desert landscapes. At Cataviña we will have a glimpse into the past at some ancient Cochimí cave paintings. Total drive time today will be about 10 hours. (Overnight: Motel in Guerrero Negro)

DAY 3 DAY 8
Punta Abreojos
Surfing. Surfing. Surfing.
This is a typical day: wake up with the sunrise, refreshed from a full nights sleep, excited by the waves reeling by in front of the camp. Warm up with a bit of optional morning yoga, led by one of our guides. Have a light breakfast of banana pancakes or cereal. Then go surfing! Beginners will have a 2 hour surf lesson at the most favorable section of beach, beginning with a beach talk about surf safety, surf etiquette, the formation of waves, types of waves, tides, and everything surfing. Experienced surfers paddle out to the peak currently offering the best bowls and barrels. After surfing yourself silly, come in for a rest. Play cards, read a book, philosophize, goof off, take a nap, write in your journal
or we may do a group field trip to get a tour of the local fishing co-op, or taste some fresh abalone at a nearby farm. When hunger calls eat some lunch, perhaps some of Pias fresh fish tacos or a salad. After food digests and energy is restored head out for another surf in the groomed offshore waves. Beginner surfers do their afternoon surf lesson, perhaps practicing turning the board, or turtling, or reading waves. Come in when you have surfed yourself silly. Take a beach stroll as the sun begins to set. Sit by yourself or with a new friend and soak up the desert and sea beauty around you. Under the kitchen canopy Pias delicious hot gourmet camp meal (perhaps a chicken curry or vegetable stir-fry) and a cool drink await you. Finish the night sitting around the campfire sipping a cold beer and swapping surfing stories while staring at the blanket of stars above. Retire to your tent, exhausted from a fun and challenging day. Get lulled to sleep by the sound of waves outside your tent and dream of the barrels you will get tomorrow.
