SURFING HOLIDAYS IN MEXICO, BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR
PUNTA ABREOJOS SURFARI - SURF GUIDES & SURF INSTRUCTORS
The surf at Punta Abreojos is fantastic. a series of right point breaks with punchy bowls, reeling barrels, and rippable walls for the experienced surfers. For the beginners the wave offers a variety of gentle sand bottom sections, which work on a variety of tides, as well as an empty beach break. The Beginner Package includes surf equipment and 4 hours of surf instruction per day, with a ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students.
Perhaps the most attractive aspect of Abreojos (which means open your eyes) is that the predominant winds blow offshore all day! The point, located on the west coast of Baja, actually faces east, with the waves wrapping around the point 180 degrees. The afternoon onshore winds, which turn other Baja spots into a wind-whipped mess, groom the reeling waves at Punta Abreojos. Swells during summer are generally between waist high to a few feet overhead, with some days in the double overhead range. No problem for the beginners since they can simply surf further inside the point where the swells must wrap further around, decreasing in size and power, and reel gently into the bay.

The Waves
Experienced surfers will enjoy the handful of points in the Punta Abreojos area, many within walking distance. You will be camping directly in front of Burgers, which is the first and biggest wave, a punchy bowly right which pulls in the most swell.
Razors, which is for advanced surfers only! It is a fast right barrel which breaks extremely close to exposed reef. This wave can be perfect and is great to watch if you dont feel like risking your life to get tubed.
Further inside the bay is Campo René, which has reefs, beachbreaks and rivermouth breaks.
Beginner surfers will enjoy the 2 beachbreaks at the camp. One is inside the reef at Burgers, with gentle rights at high tide. The other is to the west of the point, about 150 meters from the camp.
As we mentioned above, the point here actually faces east, which means that summertime south swells (May-September) produce great waves here.
You can expect the waves to range from waist high to a few feet overhead, with the bigger swells producing waves up to double overhead. The beauty of this setup is that the afternoon onshore trade winds blow offshore here, so we can surf good waves all day! In the mornings, before the offshore winds start, it can actually blow slightly onshore (which is offshore for the rest the coast). Mornings are a good time to give the nearby beachbreak a try.
