Machine readable passports
As a general rule European passport holders will only be permitted to enter the United States if they hold a machine readable passport. The majority of 'new style' passports are machine readable, although those issued outside Europe or those not in the new style may not be. Should your passport not be machine readable it will be necessary to either obtain a new passport or to obtain a US visa.
In addition to this requirement, family groups will be required to obtain individual passports for each person travelling including all children and infants. Should you currently have children on your passport, it will be necessary to either obtain a new passport or to obtain a US visa for the child in question. More information on Machine readable passports can be found here and here.
Exceptions may exist in regards to the above information. For more information on documentation requirements, contact your consulate or embassy.
