SURFING HOLIDAYS HOSSEGOR & SEIGNOSSE, FRANCE

HOSSEGOR SURFING HOLIDAYS - SURF SPOTS IN & AROUND HOSSEGOR

The beach breaks in and around Hossegor don't really need any introduction these are some of the worlds best waves. The top brands in the surfing industry all have their European HQ here and surf boutiques (yes, we really do mean boutiques) are on every street corner.

Hossegor offers the travelling surfer the finest and most consistent beach breaks in Europe, warm water and fairly constant sunshine from April to October. The town's economy is centered around surfing so you can truly experience the surfing lifestyle and culture both in and out of the water.

You'll meet surfers from every corner of the planet and if you spend a week or so here you'll almost certainly catch sight of one or more surf pros either in the bars or the surf.

Water temperature is 21ºC in summer so spring suit, boardshorts, bikini or (if you're surfing at Les Culs Nuls) nude! In the summer you're likely to want a fish for most spots but there are certainly short board-able days to be had around Hossegor. Winter is short boards, full suits and guns.

MAJOR SURF SPOTS

This is a rough guide to some of the more well-known breaks along the renowned Seignosse/Hossegor coast. With a little walking and self-exploration you will find many more empty peaks all along this coast, get out and explore! If you surf early in the day or toward sunset you'll have less crowds also look for your own peaks, the sandbanks are constantly shifting, sometimes a perfect peak can just appear outta nowhere.

LE PENON

This quality beach break works through all the tides and the sand banks are usually quite good around the pier. Holds small to medium swells and is offshore in easterly winds.

BOURDAINES

This spot is less surfed than the breaks further south, making it a good choice in summer when the breaks further down the coast have serious crowds. Again, small to medium swells and offshore in easterly winds.

ESTAGNOTS

The location of the annual Rip Curl Pro event, the bank here can produce quality left-handers with long walling sections. The high tide can produce a super heavy shorebreak when swell is big! This bank works in all swells and is offshore in easterly winds.

LES CULS NULS (BARE BUMS)

Lying between Estagnots and la Graviere, Les Culs Nuls is the official nudist beach for Hossegor and this fact alone probably contributes to the crowd factor. There are a couple of excellent sand banks here which work through all the tides, again at high tide the shore break is a killer, especially in big swells. Offshore in Easterly winds.

LE GRAVIÈRE

This is it! One of the world's best beach breaks, the banks here are as famous as the surfers who ride here. Very heavy, very hollow lefts and rights, deep ocean swells come in through a ocean canyon ans unload their power right on the sandbanks. Experienced surfers only! Some of the worlds best surfers will be out in the water when it's on and that alone is worth watching. Expect to see Robbie Page, Tom curren, Micky Picon, Martin Potter, Carwyn Williams, Sam Carrier, Tim Boal... Heavy, heavy shore break at high tide, works in all swells from 2 - 12ft and is offshore in Westerly or Northwesterly winds.

PLAGE CENTRAL

One to watch if you're a big wave charger, the outside bank throws down some huge chargeable waves when it's working. On smaller days there are a few banks near the rivermouth that produce fun, left-hander peaks. Offshore in easterly winds.

CAPBRETON

Sheltered spot that remains surfable even in the biggest swells, the banks here can produce some good right handers peeling off the groynes. Works in medium to big swells and offshore in easterly winds.

LA PISTE/VVF

Popular surf spot in summer with loads of banks that produce hollow, tubey rights when the swells are clean and gentle easterly winds is blowing offshore. Works in small to medium swells.

LABENNE-OCÉAN

Here you can escape the summer crowds and if you're prepared to do a little walking you could find a quiet spot even in the middle of summer. the banks along here work in small to medium swells and are offshore in easterly/southeasterly winds.

ONDRES PLAGE

Amazingly quiet spots along this stretch of beach and even if it's a little busy a few minutes walk in either direction along the beach will deliver an empty peak with your name on it. The banks do tend to shift on a regular basis and generally they work better at low tide on a small to medium swell. Offshore winds are easterly/southeasterly.

BOUCAU

Can't tell you anything more about this one, pretty awsome when it's working. Local surfers like to keep something for themselves.
