SURFING HOLIDAYS IN THE RePUBLIC OF CAPE VERDE

SURFING IN THE CAPE VERDE (CABO VERDE) ISLANDS

Cape Verde or, Cabo Verde, is an obvious choice for Europeans looking for a holiday in the tropics. Friendly, generous and relaxed locals, warm water and tropical trades and a great blend of Portuguese, African and European culture. The island of SAL is less then a 6 hour flight from Europe and offers unbelievable waves. The air temperature is an average of 28C° & the water about 23C°.

BEST SEASON

For Beginners: Surf courses are run all year, however, one of the best times to learn is in the summer months between May to September, this is when the swells are smaller and the winds are light. The Bay of Santa Maria is a 5 km long sandy beach with an average water temprature of 24°C. This beach catches SW swells and summer NE swells and is usually small and mellow..

For more intermediate & advanced Surfers: the winter months from September to April are the best for waves and swell, with October - March being the prime months.

SOME GENERAL INFO ON Cape Verde

With a total land area of 4,033 km Cape Verde is one of the five Atlantic Archipelagos of Macaronésia. (The others are Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands and the Savage Isles).

The Cabo Verde Archipelago of is located 450 km off the coast of Senegal and is composed of 10 islands and 8 islets. Volcanic in origin, Cape Verde is made up of two distinctly different types of islands. Its six inhabited islands, located to the West, are characterised by their mountainous landscapes, whereas the remaining three are distinguished by their long sandy beaches.

The islands are divided into two groups and named according to the trade winds that reach them from the African Continent: 'Ilhas de Barlavento' (windward)& 'Ilhas de Sotavento' (leeward).
The first group consists of the islands of Santo Antão, S.Vicente, Santa Luzia (disabitata), S.Nicolau, Sal & Boavista, and the second, more to the South, comprises the islands of Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava. The climate is tropical and dry. The average temperature is approximately 25°C.

Politically, the country is known for its stability and absence of any type of conflict.
