SURFING HOLIDAYS IN FUERTEVENTURA
THE HAZARDS
SEA URCHINS
Sea urchins have globe-shaped bodies covered with spines. Because they are not aggressive, human contact with sea urchins is accidental or intentional. Common on reef breaks, booties will provide you with basic protection, but we've all been 'urchined' through our booties at one time or another. Removing the spines from your feet can be very difficult as the spines are barbed, I usually allow the wound to become infected and then squeeze and dig them out. For more a more medical approch see the Emedicine website.
LOCALISM
To avoid trouble in the water, please respect the local surfers, be friendly in the water and obey the priority rules. Avoid surfing at the busiest times of the day and don't paddle out at breaks beyond your skill level. (Check out our ability guide as an indication) Don't leave valuables in your car.
THE SUN
The sun will burn you, this is a fact. Take proper precautions when going out in the sun especially when you are in the water. 5 basic things to remember:
1. Whenever possible wear a hat/baseball cap.
2. Sun block/sunscreen are your friend, get a SPF 45 for your face and arms.
3. Find some shade during the middle of the day (Siesta)
4. Wear polarized sun glasses.
5. Try and 'cover up' when not in the water.
THE WAVES
If you're planning on surfing the lava reefs or places with huge tubey waves then local knowledge is very important. Be careful, ask a local or your surf guide before you paddle out.
