LEARN CAPOEIRA DURING YOUR SURF TRIP IN BRAZIL
In the middle of 16th century, African slaves who were brought to Brazil by the Portugese were banned from practising any kind of martial arts or developing any fighting skills. The idea being that this would make them easier to control and dominate. This restriction only served to strengthen the slaves resolve and led them to disguise their martial art and that, very briefly, is how 'Capoeira' was born. Capoeira is a fusion between folk dance, martial arts, energy release and body control.
It's a huge understatement to say that Capoeira is an excellent way to improve your surfing. This is a rare opportunity to learn one of the most controvercial martial arts disciplines in history, in the place where it was born. The school is called Tribu Unida or United Tribe and the teacher is a disciple of the master Ezequiel from the 'Ondinas' district of Jamaica. Lessons on the secrets and the techniques of Capoeira are taught on the beach in the mornings or in the old cinema at night (now converted into a gymnasium).
The Zoco Capoeira offers
We can offer you a Surfing & Capoeira Holiday that includes all the Capoeira classes you want to take for the duration of your stay. You will also receive the traditional suite worn to practice this art as a gift to take home with you. See our 'Surfing & Capoeira Holiday' page for details.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Capoeira in 2008
There are now two Capoeira schools in Itacaré so from January 2008 we will no longer schedule classes in advance.
We think it is better for you to check out the schools and teachers yourself when you get here and then decide where to go. Lesson rates depend on time of year and number of classes taken so we will be unable to quote you for these.
