A Rough Guide to KwaZulu-Natal Kitesurf Spots

DURBAN KITEBEACH

Durban's main kitesurfing spot is located just a few km's outside the city center and is a good spot for beginners and expert kiters alike. The location offers good consistent surf year round and good wave riding conditions. The beach has showers and a grass area to rig up and pack up. The beach is unaffected by the tides and is always wide enough (even at high tide) to provide plenty of space for launching and landing on the beach.

The spot is best with NorthEasterly winds but can also support winds around to SouthEasterly. On a SouthWesterly downwind runs are possible or you can head up the North coast of Durban to kite.

NORTH COAST

A rough guide to some of the better known kitesufing spots along Durban's North coast.

UMHLANGA

Umhlanga is located approximately 15 km North of Durban and the kitesurfing beach is located at the North end of the beaches in front of the Breakers Hotel. Umhlanga works from NNE through to SW.
There are rocks especially on the low tide - if you have not kited here before have a look at the rocks at the low tide to see what you are facing. Intermediate to expert kitesurfing location. Umhlanga offers also offers excellent surf conditions.

UMDLOTI

An intermediate to expert kitesurfing location, Umdloti is a 20 minute drive north from Durban and offers similar conditions to Umhlanga. Works in NNE through to SW winds.
Again this spot is rocky and if you have not kited this spot before check out the conditions at the low tide. A steeper beach here can produce a very strong and heavy shore-break - be careful of this the beach drops off very quickly. The surf conditions here are typically slightly bigger and stronger than Durban.

UMDLOTI LAGOON

Umdloti Lagoon is 4 km north of Umdloti. A flat water spot that can be used by beginners and experts alike. Beginners need to be wary of being blown towards the highway and and mangroves. This lagoon only works in NE'erly winds.

SOUTH COAST

A rough guide to some of the better known kitesufing spots along Durban's South coast.

VULAMANZI/KELSO

Kelso lies 65 km south of Durban and offers excellent conditions in both NE'erly and SW'erly winds.

'Happies' is perfect point break and offers 2 kiting spots - the first being in front of the caravan park and the second and more advanced spot is the point itself. Both spots have rocks - especially on the point and if kiting in NE'erly winds the rocks are downwind from you. If you are blown downwind on the point there is a sandy beach approx 1 km further down wind past the rocks. The point break provides some of the best and longest waves. The beach is a beginner to expert location, while the point is strictly experts only.

The above spots are the more well-know kite spots in the area, however there are cracking unkited, uncrowded spots to be had all the way up the KwaZulu-Natal coast. We can't give you the names here because some are secret and that's the way we'd like to keep it.

Kitesurfing in Maputo, Inhambane and Mozambique

The water temperature is warm all year round, so the most you are going to need is a springsuit. On hot days in summer and winter you will be quite comfortable kitesurfing in boardshorts and a rashie.

The most consistent wind is from December - March/April and is generally a fairly consistant ranging from 13-18 knots (4 Bft) to 20+ knots (5-6 Bft). 14,15 and 16m kites should be fine, on heavier days you could go down to a 13 and if it really blasts a 9m kite.

Mozambique is wild with few good roads and difficult access and we hope it always remains this way - An ideal place for a kitesurfing adventure.

Kitesurfing in Mozambique

A Rough Guide to Mozambique's Kitesurf Spots

PONTA DO OURO

Ponta Do Ouro, is situated on the South African/Mozambique border. There is also a world class right hand reef break that is rated as one of the top waves on the coastline. Ponta offers a world class kitesurfing venue with smooth flat water on the inside and wave riding on the outside. It works best in the NE (cross on-shore) wind which is the predominant wind in the area. Best times of year to be there are from September to March.

PONTA DO MALENGANE

This spot is about 6 km North of Ponta do Ouro and is also good on a SW. Because of it's position it's cross shore here when it's cross off at Ponta Da Ora.

NOTE: we are currently putting together a complete 'spot guide' based on a recent kiteboarding trip up this coast and will update this info asap.
