KITESURFING HOLIDAYS IN PORTUGAL & THE ALGARVE

KiteSURFING & Windsurfing SPOTS IN & AROUND LAGOS

This is meant as a rough guide to the surf spots directly in and around Lagos. This is by no means an 'A to Z' style list of all the kitesurfing & Windsurfing spots in the area, only a guide to the spots you'll more than likely be visiting during your stay.

MEIA PRAIA (Lagos town beach)

Offshore northerly winds make this a primarily slalom and freeride venue. The Nortada starts to work later in the day here and doesn't build as strong whick means it's attractive to beginners and intermediates. The long sweeping beach also works in winter. Best in a south-westerly (cross-shore) with big waves. East to southerly winds are also OK but are cross-on to onshore.

RIA DE ALVOR

This lagoon is often shallow enough to stand up in, so it's an ideal spot for beginners and a safe winter alternative. The offshore north to north-westerly blows fairly gusty but there's no danger of drifting out to sea because of the breakwaters. Even when south-westerly winter storms build head-high waves on the ocean, everyone is still out having a great time - a half-metre chop will deliver ideal jump-ramps for those first flights ;-).

PRAIA DE ALVOR

Conditions here are similar to Meia Praia (see above); freeride and slalom in Nortada (which is more cross-off than than offshore here), waves with south-east to south-westerlies. To avoid risks sail and kite downwind of the breakwater. Particularly good in a south-westerly (cross-on) and waves. In a south-easterly, sail & kite closer to the rivermouth where the breakwater shapes the waves.

PRAIA DA ROCHA

This famous rocky beach is a summer hotspot. The wind arrives later than at Praia de Alvor and isn't as strong, but is good for formula training in north to north-westerlies. Kiting here in summer is a bit of a non-starter because of all the beachgoers, but come winter the stormy weather sends the sun-seekers packing and gives the thrill-seekers their chance. Best in south-easterlies as the breakwater sorts the waves, south-westerly is also OK but a little messy.
