KITESURFING IN SAL - CAPE VERDE (CABO VERDE) ISLANDS

You can kitesurf all the year round in Sal and the water and air temperatures are balmy. The Cape Verde Kitesurfing Academy is located south of Santa Maria about 50 meters from the water. The beach has sunbeds, umbrellas and fresh water showers. The nearby beachclub serves everything from drinks & snacks to complete meals.

The Bay of Santa Maria is a 5 km long sandy beach with no rocks or sharp objects. The wind blows slightly offshore at the beginning of the bay and becomes slightly onshore at the end. The water temprature is an average of 80 degrees Fahrenheit and the sandy bottom offers a very safe location for all levels from beginner to experts. The most consistent wind months are from November to June. Naturally a safety boat is always ready for any emergency.

Ponta Preta is a location made famous in the 90’s by 'Windsurf Trilogy' magazine’s series of articles describing a competition of the best waveriders in the world in Ponta Preta. Since then some of the best known waveriders, like Josh Angulo and Renaud Simhon have made Sal their home. Kiteboarding is fairly new to Sal but already some of the worlds best kiters including Mark Shinn & Mitu Manterra have been seen carving up the waves at Ponta Preta.

The best wind season is from November to June but you can kitesurf all year round as the trade winds, blow nearly the whole year. Winter/Spring (November - June) has more intense winds with an an average of 18/24 knots. Good season for intermediate to advanced Kitesurfers. The summertime (July - October) wind speeds average 13/15 knots. Good season for beginners. The air temperature is an average of 28C° & the water a balmy 24°C all year round.

LEARN TO KITESURF

Newbies & Beginners: The Cape Verde kitesurfing experience is a great way to immerse yourself in the kitesurfing travel lifestyle and learn how to kitesurf or perfect your kitesurfing techniques. We offer Learn-to-kitesurf courses in Santa Maria with Professional Kitesurfing Tuition, backed by proven coaching techniques, to anybody who's got the passion to learn or improve their kitesurfing.

Best season for beginners: Kitesurfing can be learnt any time of the year. However, one of the best times to learn is in the summer months between May to September, this is when the water is flat, the wind light, and the shore break manageable.

KITESURFING CLINICS (intermediate & advanced Kitesurfers)

Intermediate Kitesurfers: The Sal kitesurfing clinics are aimed at those who have kitesurfed before or followed a beginner course at some time. This way you don't have to go through all the basics again. The focus of the clinic is on your individual kitesurfing. Timely error correction and professional kitesurf coaching will ensure that your kitesurfing develops quickly and properly. instruction for intermediates covers such things as going up wind, going out and returning to the same point etc.
Advanced Kitesurfers: The Cape Verde Kitesurfing advanced clinic is for advanced Kitesurfers wanting assistance with jumps and advanced technique.

Best season for intermediate to advanced Kitesurfers: the winter months from November to April are best, as the wind is stronger. Also, as can be seen on the wind charts, there are a high number of days per month with strong wind. For those interested in wave riding, this is also a good time of the year to visit the islands.

KITESURFING & SURFING

Anybody & Everybody: This is a multi-adventure, multi-activity holiday where you get an introduction to both surfing and kitesurfing. Fully qualified surfing and kitesurfing instructors will teach you the basics in a fun, relaxed and safe environment. This is an ideal option for those wind still days when there's a nice clean swell running.

FULLY CUSTOMIZED MULTI-SPORTS ADVENTURES

Anybody & Everybody: This is a multi-adventure, multi-activity holiday where you call the shots.
