KITEsurfing Spots IN TENERIFE

EL Medano Kitesurfing spots

There are 3 major contributing factors responsible for the wind strength in El Médano: A wind-tunnel in the strait between Gran Canaria and Tenerife, the acceleration caused by the long south-east side of Tenerife and the thermal caused by the nearly 4000m-high Mount Teide. The result is up to 300 days of wind per year with guaranteed windy summers and even the remaining 60 days can be windy!

The trades are at their most reliable during the peak season of May till September. During the winter season the average temperature still reaches 22 degrees and the wind still blows however the direction can be less predictable and some local knowledge can be needed to find the best island spot to ride.

El Medano's two main bays offer just about all you could hope for if you kite or windsurf from easy freeride conditions to huge wave action.

South Bay - Bahia de el medano

South bay is the main spot of El Medano, and features a reasonably large sandy beach for launching. Though the wind may be a little gusty on the beach, once out on the water the wind cleans up and the sea conditions provide fantastic bump and jump riding with rolling swell and fun sized, well spaced chop. With Montaña Roja projecting out into the sea on the downwind side of the bay riders can push their skill levels safe in the knowledge that should they end up swimming they will always end back on the beach!

Bahia is suitable for any rider reasonably confident of staying upwind and is the best option for free-stylers.

Harbour Wall - El Muelle de el medano

Just a quick 5 minute upwind tack from the South bay is the Harbour wall or El Meulle.

El Meulle provides some of the easiest wave riding in Tenerife and is a firm favorite for intermediate to advanced level riders. The waves wrap around the end of the reef creating peeling waves however should you encounter a problem you will simply wash out into the bay without any risk of ending up on the rocks. If you intend to ride El Muelle we recommend taking a walk to the end of the wall first so you can familiarize yourself with the break and the location of the reef.

During high tide the waves bounce off the wall and can cause some difficulties with confused sea states however from mid tide and onwards the chop disappears leaving nice clean faces.

el Cabezo

Mostly famous for windsurfing (Cabezo used to be a regular stop on the PWA windsurf world tour) this beach has to be counted as having the best wave conditions in El Medano but should also be noted as being the LEAST friendly kite spot. A small launch area is usually very busy with windsurfers and any mistake is punished by a trip over the reef. It is strongly recommended to launch in the South bay and ride upwind to El Cabezo should you wish to ride there. Cross-onshore conditions.

Expert riders only!

playa de La Tejita

Just outside the village and separated from the south bay by a large mountain (Montaña Roja), La Tejita is a long sandy beach ideal for beginners. At the upper end of the beach the wind is slightly offshore however the beach curves round as you move down the bay ensuring it is cross shore before you run out of space.

La Tejita offers predominantly flat water conditions, making it ideal for learning. If you are on one of our kitesurfing courses, rescue cover on hand during all lessons and during most afternoons. If you plan to go out at La Tejita outside of the course times, please check with centre staff so we can ensure there is adequate cover on hand should you need it.
