El Medano in Tenerife, kitesurfing nirvana
El Medano is home to the infamous Los Alisios trade wind. Los Alisios blows from a NE direction and provides upwards of 80% of the 300 (on average) rideable days in Tenerife each year. Due to local effects including wind acceleration zones, the wind in El Medano can be expected to be between 50 to 100% stronger than is forecast.
The trades are at their most reliable during the peak season of May till September when anything less than 7 days outa 7 in the water would be considered disappointing.

THE WIND
From as early as March to mid to late September the trade winds "Los
Alisios" start to blow from the North East and the winter
groundswells die off providing a variety of kiteboarding conidtions
ideal for beginners and kiteboarders looking to progress. The NE winds provide cross to cross on shore riding conditions with the waves going from non existent to well overhead depending on the swell direction and strength of the wind however the South bay rarely has more than a foot or so of surf making it an easy launch for riders of all level in all conditions.
The trades are at their most reliable during the peak season of May till September. During the winter season the average temperature still reaches 22 degrees and the wind still blows however the direction can be less predictable and some local knowledge can be needed to find the best island spot to ride. For every wind direction Tenerife features a sailing spot.
South Bay - La Bahia
The Tenerife Kitesurfing Centre is located on this bay and South bay is the main spot of El Medano, featuring a reasonably large sandy beach for launching. Though the wind may be a little gusty on the beach, once out on the water the wind cleans up and the sea conditions provide fantastic bump and jump riding with rolling swell and fun sized, well spaced chop. With Montaña Roja projecting out into the sea on the downwind side of the bay riders can push their skill levels safe in the knowledge that should they end up swimming they will always end back on the beach!
La Bahia is suitable for any rider reasonably confident of staying upwind and is the best option for free-stylers.
THE Tenerife KITEBOARDING EXPERIENCE

There are 2 choices of Accommodation available for kiteboarders in El medano.
The Médano Hotel and the South Beach Hotel both hotels are a short walk from the kiteboarding center, the
beach, and all local amenities, bars, restaurants etc.
