El Medano nightlife & other kicks
Overlooked by Montaña Rojo (Red Mountain) to the south, this former fishing village is a prime example of no-frills, utilitarian architecture and is no beauty by any standards. However El Médano is a thriving town with a friendly, European character and a popular spot for locals to relax. Well off the beaten tourist track it offers the travelling kiteboarder a true taste of Spanish culture where the summer festivals in the square simply add to the resort's infectious atmosphere.
Only 10 minutes from the airport and everything within walking distance mean car hire is not essential.
el medano - Entertainment
Entertainment in El Medano is provided by wind & kitesurfing, bars, restaurants and, obviously, the beach. This is a perfect place to catch up on your reading, sit and watch the world go by or the fishermen bringing their daily catch in to the harbour. There are a couple of children’s play parks scattered throughout the plaza and a purpose built skate park and football pitch to the rear of town. The seafront is now smart almost posh! Lined with more local tapas bars and restaurants. The beach has sun beds for hire, WC’s, showers and even lifeguards.
Nightlife
In El Medano the nightlife is quite low key but there is more than enough going on to keep you outa trouble. The following places are all within a 5-10 minute walk from the main plaza:
Goiters, (yeah, I know - weird name) is a good pre-club bar.
¿Que Pasa? a great club and good for gigs - open until 4/5/6 in the morning! Magma is good chillout spot
Caiman a great venue for gigs and a late night drinking
Manfreds Soul Café more or less next door to Goiters, is a nice place to chill & eat
El Medano restaurants
Thank God there's no McDonalds or Burger King here yet but there are plenty of restaurants all over the town and if you ever get tired of tapas, meat and fish there are other options including sushi, pizza, Italian, Chinese... A couple of good places to try:
El Timon serves great tapas on pedestrian old town Paseo Marcial Garcia.
Tamboril and Atlantic Tasca on the beachfront both serve good tapas.
Avencios on Calle Avenida Chasna for a more upmarket or romantic meal.
Guarajara Creparie on the side of the main square - YUM!
Neptune on Paseo Pichacho for ice-cream or cake.
The Flashpoint
Located at the far end of the promenade to the west end of the town and next door to the Kiteboarding Centre. The Flashpoint bar and restaurant is definately one of the coolest bars in Tenerife and a great spot to sit back and watch the incredible stunts performed by the El Medano wind and kitesurf crew.
The Flashpoint is busiest during the day, serving good cheap food to the surfers and locals that hang out at the far end of the beach. It's exactly how I picture the perfect beach bar: Cool music, sun, sand, a great view and a few cold beers with my mates. In the evenings it's not as busy but has a great vibe, the surfers, kiteboarders and windsurfers that frequent the Flashpoint are kind, laidback and friendly.
