  
KITEBOARDING HOLIDAYS IN LANZAROTE
SCORCHED, TORCHED AND STARKLY BEAUTIFUL
Lanzarote is the most northerly and easterly of the Canary Islands
and is loacted approx. 68 miles
off the north African coast. A
number of other smaller islands lie to
the north of Lanzarote. They consist
of La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña
Clara and Los Roques. All except
La Graciosa are uninhabited.
THE ISLAND OF FIRE AND FURY
A series of volcanic eruptions took place in the south west of the island over a period of 6 years from 1730 to 1736. This area occupies 1/4 of the islands land mass and has been declared a national park (Timanfaya National Park). Lanzarote compared to the other islands is THE 'volcanic island'. It consists of about 300 extinct volcanoes, scattered lava fields and beautiful white and black sandy beaches. Also worth exploring are its many caverns, lava flows and craters. Some of these natural phenomena have been turned into places of great beauty and tourist attractions. Outstanding examples are Jameos del Agua (Lava chambers) and Cueva de los Verdes (Green caves).
CLIMATE AND WEATHER
The weather conditions are almost always favourable. In summer it can get very hot, whilst during the winter it can be cooler and cloudy with spells of occasional rain.

LA CALETA DE FAMARA
Caleta de Famara is a small fishing village situated on the north west coast of Lanzarote. The village lies at south end of a natural bay protected by a range of cliffs called “Los Riscos”. The area surrounding Famara “El Jable” has been declared a nature reserve and is protected from mass tourism, so retains its natural beauty.
LOCAL AMENITIES
Famara has a small selection of tapas bars and fish restaurants. There is something to suit all tastes and budgets. Fresh fish and seafood are the local specialities and prices are cheap compared to the UK. There are also a few supermarkets that provide the essentials to live and more.
SURF & KITEBOARDING CULTURE
Famara has a growing kiteboarding scene and the village surf scene
is already quite well established
and is frequented by surfing professionals
each winter to compete in the professional
WQS competition held at San Juan. The village has also
produced a number of professional
surfers that are pushing surfing
to the limits and competing with Europe’s finest on the ASP
circuit. Many professional Snowboarders like the Spanish Champion & Olympic
Rider Iker Fernanadez and other pro riders like Michi Albin,
Daniel Sappa, Patrik Koller, Martina
Tscharner (ex-World Half-Pipe Champion),
Burgi Heckmair, Elexeja Pozzoni... as well as the Snowboarder
Magazine's crew come
to Famara each year to Surf or
Kite.
