The Sotavento Pro Center is the perfect spot for kiteboarders
The Pro Center is located on a beautiful white sandy beach with crystal-clear turquoise water for miles around. The center also lies directly in the path odf the Sotavento Wind Funnel: strong and constant wind. Water conditions vary from flat up to six foot waves. The water and air temperatures are comfortable all-year long, summer and winter. The vast sandy beach makes launching the kite easy and safe and once you're out on the water there is an ocean of space ;-).
To enable you to maximize the conditions while on your kiteboarding holiday, the Kitesurfing Pro Center stock the top Kiteboards and kites from Cabrinha. For both the kiteboarding courses and for kiteboarding equipment rental. The latest 2009 gear is waiting to be tested by you and we stock around 180 kites and around 80 boards so you have no problem getting the board and kite you prefer. For the last six years the Kiteboarding Pro Center in Sotavento have organized the Kiteboard World Cup on the beach directly in front of the Kite Center.
We provide a reserved sunbed for you in the palm garden, right in front of the station, protected from the wind and close to the beach bar.
Records
In 2001 Sebastien Cattelan set a new hang time world record here, with an 8,87 second long jump. In 2004 Manu Taub succeeded in kiting a new Kite Speed World record with 40,58 knots (75,15 km/h).
The Pro Center Lifeguard System
A look-out keeps a constant watch over the beach and water during the Pro Center kiteboarding hours (from 10 am to 7 pm in spring and summer and from 10 am to 5 pm in autumn and winter). Whenever a kiter needs help the lifeguard on watch on the tower informs the beach lifeguard using a mobile phone.
The beach lifeguard conducts the rescue from the rescueboat, with coordination from the lifeguard on watch. In order to maintain full concentration the lifeguard on watch is changed every two hours, so his mind is always fresh. A beach assistant is right beside the guests on the shoreline to help and give tips and to launch and land the kites.
The rescue service is free of charge. However if you need to be rescued often or because you do not have an IKO/VDWS level 3 certification, we reserve the right to charge 30€ per retrieval.
