Kitesurfing in Maputo, Inhambane and Mozambique

The water temperature is warm all year round, so the most you are going to need is a springsuit. On hot days in summer and winter you will be quite comfortable kitesurfing in boardshorts and a rashie.

The most consistent wind is from December - March/April and is generally a fairly consistant ranging from 13-18 knots (4 Bft) to 20+ knots (5-6 Bft). 14,15 and 16m kites should be fine, on heavier days you could go down to a 13 and if it really blasts a 9m kite.

Mozambique is wild with few good roads and difficult access and we hope it always remains this way - An ideal place for a kitesurfing adventure.

A Rough Guide to Mozambique's Kitesurf Spots

PONTA DO OURO

Ponta Do Ouro, is situated on the South African/Mozambique border. There is also a world class right hand reef break that is rated as one of the top waves on the coastline. Ponta offers a world class kitesurfing venue with smooth flat water on the inside and wave riding on the outside. It works best in the NE (cross on-shore) wind which is the predominant wind in the area. Best times of year to be there are from September to March.

PONTA DO MALENGANE

This spot is about 6 km North of Ponta do Ouro and is also good on a SW. Because of it's position it's cross shore here when it's cross off at Ponta Da Ora.

NOTE: The rest of the spot guide (below) was written by surfers (Surfers were the first boardsports explorers to venture up the Mozambique coast) with the the surf in mind, we are currently putting together a 'spot guide' based on a recent kiteboarding trip up this coast and will update this info asap. Hopefully the guide below will give you a rough idea of what the coast is like and what to expect.

BARRA BEACH

Starting North from the top, around the tip of the bay, a north facing beach so so onshore days are offshore here! Exposed to North Easterly swells it's a good quality beach break at low tide.

THE SAND SPIT

A.k.a. 'The Mile Long Right' or 'The Mozambique Super Bank'. This wave hits a sand bar and runs the full length of beach. The wave seems to break endlessly surf as long as you can keep up or stay on your board! 10 second+ barrels are common and when this spot is going off there is nothing like it in Africa.

PRAIA TOFO

Because it is so protected, it is usually a small wave, but verly long as it runs along a sandy point. Great for longboarders or beginners.

TOFINHO POINT

The most consistant and best shaped wave in the Inhambane province! It sits directly in front of your accommodation and you are woken in the morning by the sound of the cracking barrels firing off the point. This is a world class, sand bottomed, right hand point break that delivers everything from deep spitting tubes to long carving cut backs.

DINO'S LEFT

On an Easterly swell with an offshore wind, the conditions are right for this left hand reef break to peal off and looks for all the world like the waves of Indo.

BACK BEACH

This spot is around the corner on 'The Wild Side' so it acts like a wave magnet, sucking in ALL the swell from any direction. Short sucky, hollow rights and lefts.

BACK DOOR

A very shallow right tube that breaks on an almost dry reef. Hardcore space cadetts only.

COCONUT BAY

A beautiful point that can sometimes treat you to a fun long right hander that is suitable for surfers of all abilities.

PRAIA DE ZAVORA

A longer drive to the south but if Coconut bay is holding a wave, this spot will be even better and is ALWAYS worth th drive.

QUISSICO

More exposed to Southerly swells, this wave will work if it's not going off anywhere else. The drive is 'fun' but after a paddle across the lagoon you're bound to be rewarded with some epic waves.

The same breaks as the scene in the Sic surf film 'Electric Mayhem.'
