FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
LATE 1970’S – SOMEWHERE IN CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
THE SURFER
A young boy with long blond
hair is given his first single
fin surfboard. It’s a bit
of a dog, but he patches it
up and with the help and encouragement
of family and friends he follows
in the footsteps of his surfing
heroes. One obsession begins…
LATE 1970’S – SOMEWHERE IN SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND
THE SKATER BOY
A young boy with dark brown
curly hair “borrows” his sisters roller-skate, nails
it to a short plank of wood
and rides it for the first
time down one of many steep
hills. Another obsession begins…
THE BIT IN THE MIDDLE
Both boardriders travelled,
settled, had families and careers.
The Cape Town boy for political
reasons left SA and settled
in a country full of dams.
The steel city boy swapped
his skateboard for a surfboard
and headed to a bigger city
to follow a career (and a girl).
Their trips to the surf were
few and far between. The winters
were long, cold and depressing.
Their feet began to itch…
YEAR 2000 – SOMEWHERE IN CANARY ISLANDS
THE SURFER AND THE FORMER SKATER
Two unknown surfers sit in the empty line-up both with a smug grin on their faces. Both are surfed out and the sun is setting in the distance casting a red glow on the cliffs that dominate the skyline. In the lull before the set the conversation captures the moment perfectly: "Life just doesn’t get any better than this does it?", "Nah, I'd trade the tube for a barrel anyday".
The two surfers develop a friendship
and share stories of the places
they have visited, the waves
and cultures they have experienced.
This fuelled their addiction
to travel more …
From their obsession to ride boards, travel
and experience new cultures
Zoco Boardriding was born. Nowadays
they get just as much stoke from
organising other peoples
boardriding adventures...
Still travelling, still surfing, still stoked...
